Message From Our Executive Director Sonya
Dear RRC Community,
After five deeply meaningful years, I want to share that I will be stepping down as Executive Director of the Rape Recovery Center. This decision comes after thoughtful reflection and with immense gratitude for the journey we’ve taken together.
It has been the honor of my life to lead this organization and work alongside so many of you—survivors, staff, advocates, partners, and community members—who believe in a world free from sexual violence and the healing power of community. Since stepping into this role, I’ve had the privilege and responsibility of leading RRC through a dynamic and defining period in its 50-year history. With the support of a dedicated team and community, we've navigated a global pandemic, transitioned to a hybrid service model, expanded access through telehealth, and opened a satellite office to better serve rural survivors in Tooele County.
As Executive Director, I’ve worked to grow the organization’s infrastructure and financial sustainability, invest in technology, and strengthen systems of care for underserved survivors—including those who are incarcerated. I led with values rooted in equity, transparency, and trauma-informed practice. I’m especially proud of prioritizing staff well-being and centering survivor voice in our services and decision-making.
Leadership matters, especially in this work. It’s what allows organizations like RRC to hold the complexity of survivor needs, build trust with community, and continue showing up in ways that are bold, responsive, and sustainable. It requires us to invest in people, systems, and culture because healing and justice begin within. I’m stepping away at a time when the organization is thriving: financially stable, programmatically strong, and grounded in mission. That’s the right time to make space for the next leader to build on what’s been established and carry RRC into its next chapter.
Our incredibly talented staff and Board of Directors are fully prepared to guide the organization through this transition with care and intention. The Board is launching a formal search for RRC’s next Executive Director. The job posting can be found on our website https://www.raperecoverycenter.org/work-with-us .
To the survivors who have trusted RRC with your stories, you are the reason this work matters. Your courage and voice continue to shape the direction of this organization and this movement.
To our partners, supporters, and extended community: thank you for walking alongside us. I will always be a proud and vocal advocate for the Rape Recovery Center.
In Community and Solidarity,
Sonya
