Dozens of events in store as Sexual Assault Awareness Month begins in April

The Rape Recovery Center (RRC) with community partners will host dozens of events throughout April in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Most activities are free and open to the public, each with the goal of educating the community about the causes, prevalence and prevention of sexual violence.
“Sexual assault will affect one in three women in Utah during her lifetime, from molestation, to incest, to rape. One in eight men will be affected, as well. We intend during April to address these alarming statistics, to raise public awareness of the problem and to educate the community about services for survivors of sexual violence,” said Holly Mullen, executive director at the Rape Recovery Center in Salt Lake City.
Highlights of SAAM include several yoga workshops, with movement centered on healing and designed for both female and male survivors of sexual violence; a day long sculpture collaboration April 9 for survivors led by Eden, Utah-based artist Ashley Bennett Stoddard; weekly lunch-hour discussion groups, including “Why Should I Report a Rape?”on April 16 with expert victim advocates Sim Gill, Salt Lake County district attorney; Donna Kelly, deputy Utah attorney general and Nubia Pena, victim advocate with the Unified Police Department. The Rape Recovery Center will host a lunch-hour open house April 6 at its Sugar House office to showcase volunteer opportunities and to share with the public our mission and efforts to assist victims of sexual violence.
The month ends with “An Evening of Inspiration, Healing and Hope,” the annual gala fundraiser at Westminster College to benefit the Rape Recovery Center. The evening includes elegant food and drink, a fine art auction, silent and live auctions (with celebrity guest auctioneer Gina Barberi from the X 96 “Radio from Hell Show”). State Rep. Jennifer Seelig will be honored with the “Pillar of Hope” award for her dedicated work on behalf of victims of sexual and domestic violence. Gala tickets are $75 each and can be purchased at or by calling 801-467-7282 ext. 221
